God's Law is Eternal

"I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart." (Psalm 40:8)
There is a prevalent belief in orthodox Christianity that God's Law - also called the "Mosaic Law" or "Old Testament Law" - has been done away with, superseded, annulled, abolished, made void, made null, no longer applicable, useless, without profit, etc. This article is designed to show that God's commandments in the Old Testament continue to be of great value and applicability. Specifically, this article is designed to demonstrate that God's Law never ended and it never changed. We will be using verses from both the Old Testament (to affirm their eternal standing) and New Testament (to affirm their continuance and relevance for believers in the Messiah). For more information on our view of God's Law today, feel free to check out our other articles.

YHWH will be the God of Abraham and his descendants - an "everlasting covenant"

"And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you." (Genesis 17:7)

Passover shall be observed as "an everlasting ordinance"

"It is the Lord’s Passover. 12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. 13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance...  So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance. " (Exodus 12:11-17)

Passover is "an ordinance for you and your sons forever"

"Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Pick out and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb. 22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. 24 And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever." (Exodus 12:20-24)

"Observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant."

"Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." (Exodus 31:16-17)

The Sabbath is a "perpetual covenant"

"Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant." Exodus 31:16

The prohibition on eating fat and blood is a " perpetual statute"

"This shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you shall eat neither fat nor blood.’” (Leviticus 3:17)

The Feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits shall be done "forever"

"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. 11 He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. 12 And you shall offer on that day, when you wave the sheaf, a male lamb of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering to the Lord. 13 Its grain offering shall be two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to the Lord, for a sweet aroma; and its drink offering shall be of wine, one-fourth of a hin. 14 You shall eat neither bread nor parched grain nor fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your God; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings." (Leviticus 23:9-14)

The Feast of Pentecost "shall be a statute forever"

"And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. 16 Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord. 17 You shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are the firstfruits to the Lord. 18 And you shall offer with the bread seven lambs of the first year, without blemish, one young bull, and two rams. They shall be as a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord. 19 Then you shall sacrifice one kid of the goats as a sin offering, and two male lambs of the first year as a sacrifice of a peace offering. 20 The priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs. They shall be holy to the Lord for the priest. 21 And you shall proclaim on the same day that it is a holy convocation to you. You shall do no customary work on it. It shall be a statute forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations" (Leviticus 23:15-21)

The Day of Atonement "shall be a statute forever"

"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lordyour God. 29 For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.” (Leviticus 23:26-32)

The Feast of Tabernacles "shall be a statute forever in your generations."

"Also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruit of the land, you shall keep the feast of the Lord for seven days; on the first day there shall be a sabbath-rest, and on the eighth day a sabbath-rest. 40 And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of beautiful trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. 41 You shall keep it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a statute forever in your generations. You shall celebrate it in the seventh month.42 You shall dwell in booths for seven days." (Leviticus 23:39-42)

The heave offerings are "as an ordinance forever; it is a covenant of salt forever"

"All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and your sons and daughters with you as an ordinance forever; it is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord with you and your descendants with you.” (Numbers 18:19)

YHWH's statutes, commandments, and covenant are "for all time"

"You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.” (Deuteronomy 4:40).

We must fear YHWH and "always keep" His commandments "forever"

"Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!" (Deuteronomy 5:29)

For our own good, we must keep the Law "always"

"And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day." (Deuteronomy 6:24)

Therefore, you shall obey God's instructions "always"

"Therefore you shall love the Lord your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always." (Deuteronomy 11:1)

Keep YHWH's commandments so "that it may go well with you and your children after you forever"

" 27 And you shall offer your burnt offerings, the meat and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and you shall eat the meat. 28 Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God." (Deuteronomy 12:27-28)

The Law belongs to us "forever"

"The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law." (Deuteronomy 29:29)

"You shall be careful to observe forever" God's Torah

"And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, you shall be careful to observe forever." (2 Kings 17:37)

YHWH's "precepts are sure" and they stand "forever."  "He has commanded His covenant forever"

"The works of His hands are verity and justice; All His precepts are sure. They stand fast forever and everAnd are done in truth and uprightness.
9 He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant foreverHoly and awesome is His name. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever. " (Psalm 111:7-9)

"I shall keep Your law continually, forever and ever"

"Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord— Your salvation according to Your word. 42 So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me,
For I trust in Your word. 43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, For I have hoped in Your ordinances. 44 So shall I keep Your law continually, Forever and ever45 And I will walk at liberty, For I seek Your precepts. 46 I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, And will not be ashamed. 47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments, Which I love." (Psalm 119:41-47)

The Law is our "heritage forever" and we must seek "to perform Your statutes forever, to the very end"

" My life is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Your law. 110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, Yet I have not strayed from Your precepts.
111 Your testimonies I have taken as a heritage foreverFor they are the rejoicing of my heart. 112 I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes Forever, to the very end." (Psalm 119:109-112).

God founded his testimonies "forever"

"They draw near who follow after wickedness; They are far from Your law. 151 You are near, O Lord, And all Your commandments are truth. 152 Concerning Your testimonies, I have known of old that You have founded them forever." (Psalm 119:150-152)

"Every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever"

" 158 I see the treacherous, and am disgusted, Because they do not keep Your word. 159 Consider how I love Your precepts; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness. 160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever." (Psalm 119:158-160)

Obedience yields everlasting rewards

"If your sons will keep My covenant And My testimony which I shall teach them, Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.” (Psalm 132:12)

Nothing in YHWH's Law can change - nothing can be added to or subtracted from it. "It shall be forever"

" You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you." (Deuteronomy 4:2)

“Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it." (Deuteronomy 12:32)

"I know that whatever God does,
It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him." (Ecclesiastes 3:14)

The wicked have "transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant"

“The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant.”  (Isaiah 24:5-6)

The word of God "stands forever"

" The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:8)

In the future, God's sanctucary will be in the midst of Israel "forevermore"

"Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 28 The nations also will know that I, the Lord, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”’” (Ezekiel 37:26-28)

God's dominion and kingdom are "everlasting"

" How great are His signs, And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And His dominion is from generation to generation." (Daniel 4:3)

"And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation." (Daniel 4:34)

"I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God,

And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall endure to the end." (Daniel 6:26)

"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law"

"Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. 17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:15-19)

All scripture is "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness"

" All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
